I’m really excited to share with you my brand new New Year Creative Practice Review course. For the past few years I’ve offered a series of guided reviews which have gradually become more holistic and less specific. Your practice is uniquely yours, so you don’t need me pretending there’s a one size fits all way to do this. After 2020 none of my previous courses felt appropriate, so I decided to start all over again and re-build my offering. What’s emerged is a synthesis of many of the things I’ve been doing myself, as well as ideas from conversations with makers during the past year that reflect common concerns and experiences.

Reimagine 2021 – reflecting, reviewing & planning in uncertain times

Join me in January as I lead a very low-key and mindful journey into 2021. Along the way I will share the process I go through as one year ends and another begins. Following 3 steps that I have honed over the last few years that take a holistic look at my creative practice and that reflect the changing needs I have for my life & work.

This year, more than any other, I am focusing on these 3 steps to help me navigate towards the creative work I most want and need to do in 2021:

  • unflinching reflection (addressing all that 2020 has taught me: refusing to skim over the hard parts, letting go of guilt for the good parts)

  • a meaningful review of my practice in 2020 and how sustainable it has been for me, other people & the planet

  • planning for possibility not scarcity

This process involves a lot of questioning and listening to the voice that lies within, rather than importing any planning or goal-setting structures/frameworks that often respond to the voice outside ourselves, that uses words like productivity, growth, achievement and success. In this process the parameters are set by my experiences and my needs; I am trying not to measure myself by other people’s standards. This is also a ‘me-centred’ practice – for too many years I used to plan for other people, not taking myself into consideration enough. I have also become ambivalent about planning or goal setting – some years I do it, but in others I create principles or intentions to guide me gently without a rigid structure. Whatever I do, it needs to be flexible, it needs to be something that works for me, not what others say is the right way to do it.

My aim is to begin 2021 with a full awareness of who I am right now, what I want to direct my energy towards, what my priorities are, how I can respond to the uncertainty of the coming months and move towards a practice that I can manage and that nourishes me. I want to let go of any assumptions or expectations I might have had about what 2021 should be like, instead creating momentum into an uncertain space that can develop naturally.
