MELODY VAUGHAN
When I first started supporting makers and artists I focused predominantly on writing and communication skills as I knew that this aspect of sharing the work – verbally and in writing – can be a real challenge for people. It’s not that you don’t know what your work is about, or that you aren’t passionate about what you do, it’s just that translating things from the language of material and making into words can be so tricky.
The resources in this section of the website are all from that time and come from years of experience of delivering workshops and talks about all forms of communicating about your work.
[However, it must be noted that I’m not sure I’d necessarily approach writing about your work in exactly this way now. And some of the advice (particularly involving social media) feels a bit dated. But/and I also think there are so many good things in here and I’m sure that most of it still holds up. So please don’t take this as discouragement to have a rummage around and find the bits that work for you. Until I have the time/inclination to update these I’m leaving them here.]
In this ebook I share tips for establishing a writing routine, and exercises you can do at any time to help you investigate your making practice and craft words that reflect your work. Build a writing routine into your creative practice and feel more confident communicating about the work you do.
In this ebook I share insights, tips and tricks on how to write an awesome artist’s statement, including: tools to make your writing more authentic, understanding your audience and how to tailor your words for them, choosing between 1st person and 3rd person and four different approaches to get started.
This guide will give you some suggestions for discovering your authentic, natural voice as well as exercises to help strengthen this voice.
It offers you some practical tips on how to prepare for public speaking so that you can approach your next opportunity to communicate in person with confidence.
In this ebook I share 25 tips (5 tips for 5 different topics) covering the most common types of writing you’ll have to do about your practice (including artist’s statements, marketing copy, social media posts, funding applications & product descriptions).
